Your spotlight on local services

Together 21 - supporting children, young people with Down Syndrome and their families in the Durham and Teesside area.

A project delivered by the Pioneering Care Partnership

The Together 21 Project is here to support children, young people with Down Syndrome and their families in the Durham and Teesside area.

Our Aims

  • Empowering – building knowledge and educating
  • Valuing – listening, hearing, understanding, recognising
  • Aspiring – raising expectations, changing attitudes, aiming high
  • Achieving – moving forwards, challenging barriers
  • Celebrating – acknowledging achievement, saying well done and thank you

What we do
We provide a wide range of fun learning activities to help children and young people to develop key skills. The activities provide the opportunity to build friendships within peer groups as well as support their development.in reaching their full potential.  This is a chance for parents to get to know each other, providing a vital friendship and peer support network for families.  We also provide awareness and training sessions for parents and their wider family throughout the year.

As part of our work, we raise awareness and promote positive perceptions about Down syndrome within mainstream schools, local communities and the workplace.

Our Group Sessions
Our sessions are fun packed but are designed to support the child’s development and are tailored to individual need.  Some of the areas we cover are:

  • Speech, language and communication, including use of Makaton
  • Numeracy
  • Literacy
  • Sensory play
  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills- Motor skills are movements and actions of the muscles.
  • Social Skills
  • Preparing for school
  • Celebrating each other’s  success

Over the school holidays we like to bring the whole family together and arrange various activities and trips to places like Adventure Valley, going to the cinema and family fun days at place such as Asgarth Falls. This helps with the development of social skills.

Session Times
Sessions are held at

The Pioneering Care  Centre
Carers Way
Newton Aycliffe
County Durham

Every week during term time.

Friday 9.30-12pm (Age 0-4)
Saturday 9.30-12.30pm (Age 5-17)

Our sessions are relaxed and the children have a lot of fun. Parents/carers and children learn together, gaining support and understanding from shared experiences with our small, dedicated and experienced team. Several of the team are parents of children with Down Syndrome. Why not come along and join in the fun!
