Healthwatch Darlington's Volunteer of the Month - December 2019

We are pleased to announce that December 2019 ‘ Volunteer of the month’ award goes to Edgar Saunyama!
Volunteer of the month

Edgar joined our team as a volunteer health connector in November 2018.

He has dedicated his own time to speaking to service users within the community:

-Community groups
-Refugee drop-ins
-GP surgeries
-Foodbanks

These are just some examples of where Edgar helps. He also supports our team with administrative tasks and attending events. He has become a well-respected member of our volunteering team. A massive well done.

How did you find out about volunteering opportunities with Healthwatch Darlington?

“I actually had been looking to volunteer as l had never volunteered before, one day l walked past the Healthwatch office & saw the posters showing volunteering opportunities then l wrote the phone number down. That is how l first found out about Healthwatch.”

Why did you decide to join the team?

“I decided to join the team because at the time l was doing an English course & an ICT course & l thought volunteering for Healthwatch to improve those skills. I also wanted to do something positive in the society.”

What has been a highlight of your volunteering experience so far?

“The highlight of my volunteering has just being able to support different groups of people in the community especially the vulnerable and learning new things.”

Do you have any tips for anyone considering volunteering for Healthwatch Darlington?

“My advice for anyone considering to join Healthwatch is to do so as it can only have a positive impact of your life. For me personally l have found out that it can be very rewarding, helps you grow as a person and it’s a good opportunity to meet new people.”

"I’m thrilled that Edgar has been awarded “Volunteer of the Month”. He is one of our most dedicated and valued volunteers and we’re so pleased to have seen him gain confidence and make new friends over the last year. We really appreciate the time and commitment all our volunteers give to us on a regular basis, we could not do what we do without them! Well done Edgar and thank you so much for all you do for Healthwatch Darlington!"

Chief Executive Officer, Michelle Thompson

“We really appreciate Edgars commitment and dedication to his volunteering role at Healthwatch Darlington. When I met Edgar he was very quiet but slowly he has gained confidence and really understands Healthwatch Darlington’s vision. He gets very involved with all aspects of Healthwatch Darlington and gives anything a go, which is really encouraging for other volunteers.

It’s a lovely end to 2019 and we are very happy to be able to present Edgar with this award as he truly deserves it. Thank you Edgar.”
