Your spotlight on local services

Healthwatch Darlington's Volunteer of the Month (June 2019) - Alistair Bertram

Healthwatch Darlington are really pleased to announce that this months ‘Volunteer of the Month’ for June 2019 is Alistair Bertram. Alistair was presented with the award during yesterdays ‘Volunteer Celebration Tea Party’.

Alistair joined Healthwatch Darlington as a Social Media Volunteer in January 2019. Alistair previously went to the Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College and during a gap year decided to volunteer for Youthwatch Darlington.

How did you first find out about volunteering opportunities at Healthwatch Darlington?

I was recommended by a friend who saw that they were looking for volunteers and I thought that it would  be a good fit for me.

Why did you to decide to join the team?

I felt that I could gain valuable skills that I could use in the future, such as team working and interpersonal skills. The roles looked interesting like the Social Media Volunteer role, and as I enjoy using technology I thought it was the perfect role for me.  I also liked the idea of being part of a charity that would make a difference to the local community.

What has been your volunteering highlight so far at Healthwatch Darlington?

I think my volunteering highlight has been improving some of the local GP waiting areas. We went and improved the information about certain health issues and included information about services available for young people in Darlington. I also got to design some of the posters that were put in the waiting areas.

Do you have any tips for anyone considering volunteering for Healthwatch Darlington?

I think you need to know what you want to gain out of volunteering in order to get the role best suited to you.

“Alistair has been a breath of fresh air for our Youthwatch team! Always willing to help, his media skills are fantastic and have helped the team so much. We really appreciate the time he gives to both Youthwatch and Healthwatch Darlington, we couldn’t do what we do without our amazing volunteers. Alistair is very much part of the Healthwatch family and I’m so pleased he was chosen as our Volunteer of the Month! It’s a pleasure to know him!” – Michelle Thompson, Chief Executive Officer

“Since January 2019 Alistair has been a massive help to Youthwatch Darlington. His online/media skills have been fantastic in helping the group to bring their projects to life. Alistair led the way in launching Youthwatch Darlington’s Instagram and Twitter account helping to create new content. In turn this is helping young people to gain access to more information about health and social care in Darlington online. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Alistair and watching his confidence grow. This month’s award couldn’t be more deserved. Well done!”  – Jemma Austin, Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator
