NHS Volunteer Responders can provide support to people who need to shield because they are at higher risk of serious medical complications from COVID-19.

Until now, only health and care professionals and local authorities have been able to refer people who they consider need this service but who may not been one of the 1.5 million people to have received a shielding letter.

Following discussions with NHS England, local Healthwatch services can now also refer people who they believe are vulnerable or are at higher risk.

NHS Volunteer Responders support with simple but vital tasks including driving people to and from hospital, delivering medication, and telephone befriending. Volunteers will also support the NHS to transport equipment and supplies. NHS Volunteer Responders are not intended to replace local groups helping their vulnerable neighbours but is an additional service provided by the NHS. All other support and referrals will still be made to Darlington Community Support Hub
