How accessible is your healthcare?

People who have a sensory impairment or a learning disability continue to face difficulty communicating with services, new analysis has found.

In 2022, our Your Care, Your Way campaign highlighted that people who are deaf, blind or who have a learning disability are blocked from accessing healthcare, as many services don't meet their duties under the Accessible Information Standard (AIS).

The AIS requires them to support people to communicate with staff and clinicians, provide healthcare information in accessible formats and record people's communication needs in their records.

A revised version of the AIS is due out this year but while we await its publication, we continue to hear from people and their carers about a lack of support.
