Reducing avoidable A&E trips with the Call Before Convey (CBC) pathway

While it's vital to get patients to A&E quickly when they need it, it's also often better to provide care in other ways.

The following information is from North East and North Cumbria ICB.

In many parts of our region, NEAS is now operating a Call Before Convey (CBC) pathway, which gives ambulance crews a direct route to community‑based clinical support for eligible care and nursing home residents.

This means they can get help from specialist teams and clinicians rather than automatically taking the person to hospital, if this is appropriate. Older and frail patients often experience better outcomes when treated in familiar surroundings, reducing risks like deterioration, delirium and prolonged hospital stays. CBC provides a single point of access to services including Urgent Community Response, community nurses and therapists, district nursing, urgent equipment provision and frailty teams.

It's an important contribution to our region's drive to offer the right care, in the right place, reducing avoidable trips to A&E and treating people closer to home where that is best.
