Children and Young Peoples Mental Health - Transformation Plan Consultation Report 2016

Darlington Borough Council (DBC)
and Darlington Clinical
Commissioning Group (CCG)
contacted Healthwatch
Darlington (HWD) to help gather
feedback from Children and
Young People (CYP), Parents and
Carers.

Summary

Healthwatch Darlington wanted to understand what young people and parent/carers wanted form their mental health services and what would help them.

“Giving young people options around their
support. I didn't want my parent in the room
when I was speaking but they said they had to
stay in the room. I felt embarrassed talking
about my ordeal and couldn't really tell
everything as it upset me and didn't want to
upset my parent. I also asked for a female but
never got one.”

Findings

Services users identified the following key themes:

  •  Waiting times need improvement (Some young people waiting more then six months)
  •  Lack of information available about mental health within school settings
  •  Parent/carers feel helpless with the lack of knowledge and information provided by services. They want to help their child.
  •  Parent/carers in Darlington want more support.
  •  Young people were not familiar with mental health apps.
  •  Young people want to see the same health professional and said this was frustrating.
  •  More mental health awareness was a top priority.

Next Steps

The findings and recommendations from this piece of work were used to inform the local transformation plan for Darlington in 2016.
