This new joint initiative between Tees Valley YMCA and the In2 project will see over 150 young people from Darlington access tablet devices to help them with their learning, access support services and take part in remote arts activities.

Freya Svendsen, Community Services Manager of the Tees Valley YMCA said:

“We had to pause delivering face-to-face activities due to the COVID-19 restrictions, so quickly moved our programme online.  We were very aware that this would prevent many young people from participating due to some having little or no access to the internet.  This funding will allow us to reach some of the communities who have been most isolated by the pandemic and to start reconnecting with our young members.”

Kate James, Project Manager for the In2 project added:

“We have been working through the schools since the programme started in 2019, but obviously the current restrictions have severely hampered our work.  This generous grant will allow us to maintain momentum and keep supporting the young people across the summer holiday and as they transition to secondary school.  The In2 project aims to remove barriers to participation and to broaden the range of experiences open to the children.”

Tees Valley YMCA is a charity supporting young people to live well and thrive, focussing on early intervention and support. Its community based support includes providing fun, open access activities to young people in Darlington as well as issue based work, supporting positive mental and physical wellbeing.

The In2 project is working with Year 6 pupils from Corporation Road, Firthmoor, Harrowgate Hill and Northwood Primary Schools, supporting them through the transition to secondary school using sports and arts activities, over and above the normal curriculum.
